Answers to common questions about Hatmail email.
Sign-up and sign-in
How do I create a mailbox?
Click “Sign up”, enter your first and last name, choose an address at @hatmail.kz, think of a password and enter a Kazakhstan mobile number. An SMS with a code is sent to the number — once you enter it, the mailbox is ready.
The address consists of Latin letters, digits and dots, is 3 to 30 characters long and starts with a letter. Up to three mailboxes can be registered to one phone number.
How do I sign in?
On the sign-in page enter the address (you may omit “@hatmail.kz”) and the password. If the mailbox has two-step sign-in turned on, the second step asks for a code from the authenticator app.
How do I change the language?
The interface is available in Russian, Kazakh and English. The switch is in the mail header, in the side menu on a phone and in the settings. SMS codes arrive in the selected language too.
Recovering access
I forgot my password. What do I do?
On the sign-in page click “Forgot password?” and enter the mailbox address — an SMS with a code is sent to the phone number given at sign-up. Enter the code and a new password.
After recovery all previous sessions are closed. If two-step sign-in was on, it is turned off and app passwords are revoked — turn it on again in the settings.
How do I change the recovery phone number?
Settings → “Recovery phone” → “Change”. You need the current password and the SMS code sent to the new number.
I have access to neither the password nor the phone number
Write to support@hatmail.kz from another address and tell us what happened. We will ask you to confirm that the mailbox is yours.
Two-step sign-in and app passwords
What is two-step sign-in and how do I turn it on?
After the password, the mail asks for a six-digit code from an app on your phone. A stranger cannot get into the mailbox even if they learn the password.
Settings → “Two-step sign-in” → “Turn on”. Install an authenticator app on your phone (Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Yandex Key or another), scan the QR code or enter the key by hand and confirm with a code from the app.
What are backup codes for?
When you turn it on you get ten backup codes. Each works once and replaces the app code if you don’t have your phone. Keep them separately from the password: we will not show them a second time. You can get new codes in the settings — the previous ones then stop working.
I lost the phone with the authenticator app
Sign in with a backup code: at the code step click “Enter a backup code”. Then turn two-step sign-in off in the settings and turn it on again on the new phone.
If you have no backup codes, recover access by SMS via “Forgot password?” — two-step sign-in is turned off in the process.
What are app passwords?
Outlook, Mail on iPhone and other email apps cannot ask for a code from the app. When two-step sign-in is on, a separate password is created for each such app: Settings → “Two-step sign-in” → “App passwords”.
The password is shown once — enter it in the app instead of the mailbox password. You can create up to five passwords and revoke any of them without changing the mailbox password.
Email apps: Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, Gmail
Which settings do I enter in an email app?
Incoming mail (IMAP): server mail.hatmail.kz, port 993, SSL/TLS encryption. Outgoing mail (SMTP): server mail.hatmail.kz, port 465, SSL/TLS encryption, with authentication.
The username is the full mailbox address, for example name@hatmail.kz. The password is the mailbox password or, if two-step sign-in is on, an app password.
How do I add the mailbox to Outlook?
File → “Add Account”, enter the address, choose “Advanced options” → “Let me set up my account manually” → IMAP and enter the servers and ports from the answer above.
How do I add the mailbox on an iPhone, iPad or Mac?
Settings → “Mail” → “Accounts” → “Add Account” → “Other” → “Add Mail Account”. Choose IMAP; enter mail.hatmail.kz as both the incoming and the outgoing mail server, and the full address as the username.
How do I add the mailbox to Thunderbird or the Gmail app?
Thunderbird: “New Account” → “Email”, enter the address and password, click “Configure manually” and enter the servers and ports.
The Gmail app on a phone: “Add account” → “Other” → the address → “Personal (IMAP)” and the same servers.
The app does not accept the password
Check that the username is the full address and that the ports and encryption are correct. If two-step sign-in is on, the regular password does not work in apps — create an app password.
Other mailboxes: Gmail, Mail.ru, Yandex
Can I read mail from another mailbox in Hatmail?
Yes. In the “Other mailboxes” section of the settings you can connect up to five Gmail, Mail.ru or Yandex mailboxes, or any service with IMAP access. Their incoming and sent emails are copied to Hatmail, and you can reply from that mailbox’s address.
Copying is one-way: what you read, move or delete in Hatmail does not change in the original mailbox. On connection the latest 300 emails of each folder are copied, then new ones.
Which password do I enter when connecting?
Not the mailbox password but an app password — it is created in the security settings of that service (Google, Mail.ru, Yandex). The connection form has step-by-step hints for each of them.
We store the app password encrypted. You can revoke it at any time with the service itself, and disconnect the mailbox in the Hatmail settings, keeping or deleting the copied emails.
Folders and smart folders
What are smart folders?
Emails from government bodies, banks and mobile operators, carriers and education services are labelled automatically and gathered in “Government”, “Bills & receipts”, “Travel” and “Education”. The emails themselves stay in the inbox — a smart folder only shows them together.
How do I create my own folder?
In the sidebar click “+” next to the “Folders” heading, or open Settings → “Folders”. There you can also rename or delete a folder: emails from a deleted folder go to the trash.
How do I find an email?
Type words into the search box above the list. On a computer there are options next to the box: from, to, subject, dates, with attachments only. The filters above the list show unread emails, emails with attachments and starred ones.
Spam and security
How do I report spam?
Open the email and click “Spam” — it moves to the “Spam” folder and the filter takes it into account. Emails from people in your contacts are not treated as spam.
Report mailings and fraud from @hatmail.kz addresses to abuse@hatmail.kz.
What does “Verified sender” mean?
The badge appears on emails from well-known organizations when our server has made sure that the email was really sent from their domain. If an email poses as such an organization but fails the check, a warning appears instead of the badge.
The organization’s logo in the circle next to an email is also shown only after this check.
Why are images not shown in an email?
Images from other servers are not loaded by default: they tell the sender that the email has been opened. There is a “Show” button above the email. Images embedded in the email itself are shown right away.
Are emails scanned for viruses?
Yes, incoming and outgoing emails are scanned automatically by an antivirus on the mail server.
Notifications
How do I turn on new email notifications?
Settings → “Notifications”, then allow them in the browser. A notification shows the sender and the subject. They are turned on for each device separately.
Notifications on iPhone and iPad
On iPhone and iPad notifications work only for mail added to the Home Screen: open hatmail.kz in Safari, tap “Share” → “Add to Home Screen”, start Hatmail from the screen and turn notifications on in the settings.
iPhone and iPad require a notification for every message from the server, otherwise they revoke the permission. So an email that lands in Spam also produces a short silent notification there — tapping it opens the Spam folder. On other devices there are no notifications about spam.
Notifications do not arrive
Check that they are allowed for hatmail.kz in the browser settings and in the device’s own notification settings. If the mail tab is open and visible, no system notification is shown — the list updates by itself.
Emails, formatting and contacts
How do I format the text of an email?
The compose window has a formatting bar: bold, italic, underlined and struck-through text, size, lists, quote, link, image in the text and emoji. The shortcuts Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I, Ctrl+U and Ctrl+K work; Ctrl+Enter sends the email.
Can I undo sending?
Yes, within 10 seconds: after sending, a message with an “Undo” button appears at the bottom — the email returns to drafts. Emails from the address of a connected external mailbox leave immediately and cannot be undone.
Where are my drafts and my signature?
An email is saved to “Drafts” by itself while you write it. The signature is set in Settings → “Signature” and is added to new emails, replies and forwards.
How do contacts work?
The “Contacts” section holds the address book: names, addresses, phones, organizations and notes. Addresses from it and those you have recently written to are suggested in the “To” field. The sender of an email can be added with the “Add to contacts” button.
Contacts can be imported from a .vcf file and exported to one.
How do I turn on an auto-reply while on vacation?
Settings → “Auto-reply”: turn it on, write the text and, if needed, set the first and last day. Senders will receive this message in reply to their email.
What works without the internet?
The mail opens without a connection too: you see the lists of emails and the emails you have already opened on this device. An email sent while offline waits in a queue and leaves when the connection returns; attachments for such an email must be uploaded beforehand.
Marking, moving and deleting emails are unavailable offline.
Account and support
How do I change my name, photo or password?
Click your name in the top right corner (on a phone — the circle in the search bar) and open the settings. There you change the first and last name, the profile photo, the signature and the password. The mailbox address cannot be changed.
How do I delete the mailbox?
Settings → “Delete mailbox”. You need the password and the mailbox address for confirmation. The mailbox, all emails and connected mailboxes are deleted immediately and cannot be restored; the address stays taken and cannot be registered again.
